Christmas Program:
The children have been hard at work practicing for their Christmas program.  It is scheduled for Monday, December 12, in the high school gymnasium.  Please put it on your calendar and we hope to see you there!

Field Trip to Klackle Orchards:
The children are very excited to take our field trip to Klackle Orchards tomorrow. Please be sure that your child wears their Class T-Shirt that they are bringing home today. Also be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the cool weather conditions. We can’t wait to see everyone in their T-Shirts tomorrow!

 Monthly Reading Calendar:
I will be collecting the October Reading Calendar from your child’s Reading Folder on Monday, October 31st, in order to hand out Book-It Coupons and monthly rewards.  In order to earn the coupon and a reward, the children need to read at least five nights a week during the month.

Math:
We have been working hard on incorporating Rocket Math into our Everyday Math Program. The children are progressing well. They are so excited when they achieve their goal and move up the rocket!

The vocabulary we have covered in our Everyday Math Series this week is:
·         Turn-around Facts: A pair of addition facts in which the order of the addends is reversed. For example: 4 + 5 = 9 and 5 + 4 = 9.
·         +9 facts: +9 facts can be found on the Facts Table. They are in the furthest column to the right and the lowest row in the Table. If 9 is added to any number, the digit in the ones place in the sum increases by 1 as you move across the 9 row and down the 9 column.
·         +9 shortcut: Beginning with 1 + 9, the digit in the ones place in the sum is 1 less than the number added to 9. For example: 9 + 1 = 10, 9 + 5 = 14.

Mobile Dentist:
The Mobile Dentist will be here on November 7 and 8. If you would like your child to see them please be sure to send in your child’s registration form ASAP. Thanks!

Social Studies/Science:
We discussed reasons why people live in communities.  We discovered through a few books and video clips that:
·         People live in communities because they help people meet their basic needs.
·         People live in communities because they help keep them safe.
·         Communities have a government.  A government is made up of people who are chosen to make and carry out rules for the community.
One big job of a community government is to keep people safe.

Class T-Shirts:
Our class t-shirts have arrived!  Please wear them on our field trip to Klackle Orchards.  We will be wearing them as a class on many special days in 2nd grade.  I will let you know what days are “Class Shirt Days” through our weekly newsletters.

Toilet Paper Pumpkins:
The children have really enjoyed creating their toilet paper pumpkins! Thank you for sending in a roll of toilet paper so that your child could complete this project. I brought in a few extras, but I know that many children are still waiting to complete this fun project that you can display at home for years to come. If you haven’t sent in a regular roll of toilet paper with your child, please do so. If you are not able to, please let me know so that I can arrange to bring more in.
